About Nick

Hi, I’m Nick Harlow, and I run Be With Nick. By day I’m a senior software engineer. The rest of the time I’m in the garage or on a home project, usually with a calculator open on my phone.

This site started in 2020 as a welding blog. In 2026 I rebuilt it around the thing I always wanted myself: quick, accurate calculators for home, DIY and welding projects, with guides that explain the numbers.

Why I built it

Most project mistakes start with a bad number: too little concrete, the wrong can sizes, a steel order that’s twice as heavy as expected. As an engineer I can’t help checking the maths, so I turned those checks into tools anyone can use on a phone, in the store or at the bench.

How I keep it accurate

  • Every calculator is built from published formulas and reference data, and each one is tested automatically before it goes live.
  • Each guide is researched from manufacturer specs, manuals and real owner experience. When I lean on an expert source, I link to it.
  • I’m an enthusiast, not a certified welder or licensed contractor. For anything structural, electrical or safety-critical, I’ll always point you to a qualified pro.

More detail is on how I test and review. If you spot a mistake, let me know and I’ll fix it.

How the site is funded

Everything here is free. The site is supported by Google ads and Amazon affiliate links: if you buy through a link, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Brands can’t pay to be featured or ranked. Details are in the affiliate disclosure.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope your next project goes smoothly.
